Riding the Subway with Stanley Kubrick

As most New Yorkers know, the subway system is the lifeline of New York City.   In 1946 Stanley Kubrick set out as a staff photographer for LOOK Magazine to capture the story of New York City’s subway commuters.

While making Spartacus, both Kubrick and Harris found out about a new book called Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. When they received a copy in the office, they were so excited to read it that Harris cracked the hardback spine and, as he read a page, would rip it out and hand it to Kubrick. When they finished, they knew they had to make it into a movie.
